SW-5 Leash Trainer

The SideWalker® creates a more enjoyable walking experience for you and your dog. Gently corrects overly enthusiastic leash pulling and helps your dog learn appropriate on-leash behavior. The ‘self-teaching’ design assists in reinforcing appropriate leash training and eliminating excessive pulling. The SideWalker has 5 adjustable settings from low to high plus a vibration option so you can select a setting appropriate for your dog. When the dog pulls on the leash, the pressure of the collar strap on the SideWalker activates either a vibration or a stimulation. The vibration or stimulation gradually increases as the dog pulls and resets when the pulling stops.

FAQ

What is the purpose of the SideWalker?

The SideWalker is used to train dogs to walk on a leash without pulling and to reinforce appropriate leash walking behavior.

How does the SideWalker work?

A sensor under the collar strap on the SideWalker is triggered by pressure when the dog pulls on the leash (or when you pull the leash to direct the dog into the desired position.) When the sensor is activated, the dog receives either a vibration or a stimulation. The SideWalker should be set to a level that is just enough to distract the dog from the pulling behavior. Most dogs learn quickly that the sensation stops when the pulling stops.

How long will it take for my dog to stop pulling (or to respond when I pull)?

Several variables affect how quickly your dog’s behavior will change, most notably the personality of your dog and the environment in which you are training the dog. Most dogs begin to understand the relationship between pulling and the vibration/stimulation after several activations of the collar. The pulling behavior diminishes quickly in some dogs and more gradually in others. If there is no noticeable change in pulling behavior after a reasonable trial period, check the collar to make sure the fit is good and the contact posts are the correct size. If collar fit is appropriate and the dog continues to pull, the SideWalker setting should be increased one level.

What is a remote trainer?

Remote trainers allow you to communicate remotely with your pet. With proper use, they help reinforce your commands and correct your dog’s unwanted behaviors. They provide the ability to train your dog with precise timing and with consistency, both of which are important for effective training.

How does a remote trainer work?

There are two basic components to a remote training system: a handheld “transmitter” and a “receiver” which is worn on a dog collar.

The transmitter sends a radio signal to a special receiver on the dog’s collar. The receiver on the collar “communicates” to your dog through a set of two stainless steel posts. The posts are part of the receiver collar and they are in contact with your dog’s neck.

You can use the remote trainer to send a wide range of training messages to your pet. Depending on the training situation, the training message may be delivered as:

  1. An audible tone or a vibration
  2. A brief  stimulation* (1 second)
  3. A constant stimulation (up to 8 seconds)

The training message from the dog’s receiver collar can get your dog’s attention or distract him from an unwanted behavior. By obeying your obedience command or by stopping the undesired behavior, your dog quickly learns to avoid and/or stop tone or sensation which is delivered by the receiver collar.

* “Stimulation” may also be referred to as “correction”, “training stimulation”, “training correction”, “training signal”; or “shock”

Will the stimulation signal hurt my dog?

The “stimulation” from the collar is intended to distract your dog by delivering an unpleasant but harmless sensation similar to the static shock you receive touching a metal door knob after after walking across a carpet in your socks.

The BigLeash training collar provides you with multiple stimulation levels. Most dog trainers find they can achieve their desired results using a low intensity stimulation, often barely perceptible to humans. All BigLeash models also include an audible signal which allows you to condition your dog to associate the audible tone with the training correction, thus eliminating the need for the stimulation altogether.

The BigLeash includes both audible and vibration training options.

How big does my dog need to be to use the SideWalker?

The SideWalker is safe and effective on dogs as small as 6 pounds.

How old does my dog need to be to use the SideWalker?

We recommend waiting until the dog is 4-6 months old.

Will weather affect how the SideWalker works?

The components in the SideWalker are specified to operate from minus 25 degrees (F) to 125 degrees (F). A significant and rapid change in temperature may temporarily disrupt some of the SideWalker functions until the device adjusts to the new temperature level.

What is the warranty on these collars?

1. DogWatch, Inc. provides a 2 year limited warranty on the transmitter and receiver for both parts and labor from the date of purchase.

2. DogWatch, Inc. provides a 1 year warranty on parts and labor for batteries from the date of purchase.

3. Accessories such as chargers and splitter cables carry a 1 year warranty.

4. Warranty does not cover repairs or replacement due to misuse by the owner or dog, improper maintenance or lost units.

5. Water damage on transmitters that are “water resistant” is not covered under warranty and subject to repair charges.

6. The warranty is void if the unit has been altered or an unauthorized person has attempted repair work.

7. Warranty is non-transferable.

What age should my dog be before I can begin using an remote trainer?

The appropriate age depends on the dog and his readiness for training. Your dog needs to have a basic understanding of what is expected of him and he must understand basic commands. Some trainers recommend waiting until the dog is five or six months old; others will train younger dogs if they understand the basic commands.

What kind of safety features does the BigLeash have?

In addition to having 15 training levels plus audible and vibration modes, the BigLeash can be set to “0” stimulation level so that you will not accidentally send a correction when you have the collar on the dog but are not actively using the trainer. Additionally, the BigLeash includes an automatic shut-off feature that limits the continuous stimulation to 8 seconds.
